Workers Rights are Human Rights!

This year marks the 138th anniversary of the Great Upheaval, when hundreds of thousands of workers across the United States went on strike for an eight hour work day. In Chicago, workers confronted strikebreakers and were attacked by state authorities, which set off the Haymarket Affair that resulted in deaths and even more injuries. Since then, workers around the world commemorate May Day by fighting for fair wages, better working conditions, and an end to exploitative practices in the workplace.

Fascism is an attack on workers. This year, Marcos Jr. faked support for the workers by saying, “the government continues to support the working class and uphold the principles of fairness, dignity, and equity across all workspaces,” while attacks on workers, trade unionists and labor organizers are mounting:

Last year, we saw the murder of BPO Industry Employees Network Philippines (BIEN) leader Alex Dolorosa

In September 2023, Nexperia, a semiconductor manufacturer, fired 8 workers, including 3 union officials as part of an effort to repress organizing in the workplace, an additional 54 workers temporarily laid off for six months, and another 72 facing upcoming layoffs.

Jeepney drivers are mounting days-long transport strikes in response to the administration's unfair and costly “modernization program” that would ruin the livelihood of hundreds of thousands of drivers.

Today, the US Emba 6 were arrested for protesting the US’ role in the plunder of the Philippine’s land and resources and the exploitation of Filipino workers.

Even abroad, Filipinos do not escape exploitation and mistreatment from the ruling elite in the Philippines or their foreign employers, like the Jollibee workers who were unjustly and illegally terminated for asking for fair wages in Jersey City, NJ or the United 6 Filipino fishermen who were abandoned by their employers at Westport Marina in Washington.

It is imperative that we, as Malaya Movement USA, rise up alongside workers who are fighting for their basic political and civil rights. Join us as we declare that Workers Rights are Human Rights! Sahod itaas, presyo ibaba! Kabuhayan, karapatan, at kasarinlan, hindi Cha-Cha! (Livelihood, rights, and sovereignty, not Cha-Cha!)
