Statement on the Meta’s Censorship of Progressive Voices in the Philippines

Malaya Movement USA strongly condemns Meta/Facebook’s censorship of progressive groups in the Philippines. This statement is in response to the recent censorship spree of Jose Maria Sison tribute posts and the shutdown of the Facebook pages affiliated with the progressive organizations Anakbayan, Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), and Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) in the Philippines.

On December 9, 2022, on the eve of International Human Rights Day, the U.S. Department of Treasury Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced that it is sanctioning rapist and sex trafficker Apollo Quiboloy. This sanction would freeze Quiboloy’s assets in the U.S., from bank accounts to any real estate holdings. It would also prevent businesses from engaging in any deals with Quiboloy. Quiboloy is one among 40 individuals that the U.S. Department of Treasury sanctioned for corruption and human rights violations.

The Malaya Movement USA joins the Filipino people in celebrating International Human Rights Day and the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations. Today must serve as a reminder and a continuing call to action to defend and assert human rights and the collective rights of the Filipino people against the continued violations of the Philippine government under the Marcos-Duterte regime.

Rightfully so, Filipinos launched protests in response to Vice President Kamala Harris' visit to the Philippines to meet with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte.

The Marcos Jr. regime has taken their dangerous red-tagging campaign against people’s organizations overseas. The state sponsored “Special Mission Project” tour of the U.S. peddled lies to further endanger and discredit those who dare criticize the corrupt and fascist government in the Philippines.
