Start Sara’s Impeachment Trial Now!
The unconstitutional maneuvers of opportunist senators to dismiss Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial before it even begins are the latest shameful and absurd example of how corrupt the political system is in the Philippines. Laws are treated by the ruling political dynasties as if they are merely ‘optional’ rules that can be bent or disregarded at their whim, to serve their own selfish interests.
The overwhelming amount of evidence against Sara Duterte would clearly prove her to be guilty of violating the Constitution, treason, bribery, graft and corruption of at least Php 850 million (more $15 million) in public funds, and betrayal of public trust. This is why the Duterte camp is exerting all efforts to dismiss the trial before any evidence can be presented, just like they’re attempting to do with Rodrigo Duterte’s ICC trial.
The Marcos and Duterte camps are proving to the world that they have no respect at all for democracy or the will of the Filipino people. According to a recent survey, a resounding 88% of the Filipino people want Sara Duterte to stand trial for her charges. Yet, despite the widespread clamor of the people for justice to be served, President Marcos Jr. has repeatedly stated publicly that he does not want the trial to commence.
Marcos is terrified that the trial will embolden Duterte’s supporters to strike back at him and expose his own massive corruption of confidential funds, which is several times larger than Sara’s. Meanwhile, Senate President Chiz Escudero has taken that signal from Marcos and exerted every effort to postpone the reading of the Articles of Impeachment multiple times, deliberately delaying the trial to avoid a political crisis in the Senate that results in a backlash against Marcos.
Both Duterte and Marcos must be held accountable for their crimes against the country and the Filipino people. Filipinos in the Philippines and overseas demand that the impeachment trial begin immediately and that justice be served. Our people deserve a government with public officials that truly uphold democracy, human rights, and sovereignty. Self-serving thieves masked as politicians must be brought to justice and never be allowed to snake their way into seats of political power ever again.
