Justice and Accountability “Archived” by the Senate

Malaya USA  joins Filipinos across the U.S. and around the world in condemning today’s move of the Philippine Senate to “archive” the articles of impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte. This Senate decision effectively kills the impeachment trial and ignores the Filipino people’s widespread demand to hold her accountable for charges of massive corruption of public funds and abuse of her office. Legal loopholes and procedural technicalities have been abused by the majority pro-Duterte Senate to protect the interests of the oligarchic political dynasties.

The Senate decision comes after the Supreme Court (SC) ruled on July 25, 2025 that the House of Representatives’ impeachment complaint was unconstitutional and “void for violating the one-year ban and due process requirements.” Of the 13 SC justices that were present for the unanimous ruling, 11 of them were appointed by former president Rodrigo Duterte. A motion for reconsideration was filed by the Philippine House of Representatives on August 4th to seek a reversal of the constitutionally questionable ruling, but the SC stood by it.

This clearly politically-biased ruling is a glaring example of the deep-seated corruption in the Philippine judicial and legal system and demonstrates that genuine justice is nowhere to be found in the Philippine government system. It only underscores the necessity of Rodrigo Duterte’s crimes against humanity to be tried by the International Criminal Court, since he would surely be able to evade accountability and justice in the Philippines.

Malaya USA will hold an online teach-in and speakout on Saturday, August 9, 2025 with concerned Filipinos from across the U.S. who refuse to stand by this flagrant abuse of power that undermines any semblance of democracy in the rotten Philippine system of government.
