Live up to Andres Bonifacio’s legacy! Fight against corruption! Fight for genuine change!
On Bonifacio Day, Filipinos all over the world took to the streets to demand that all those implicated in stealing from the Filipino people be held accountable for their crimes. In the United States, the clamor for justice and accountability were echoed by Malaya Movement chapters and other progressive Filipino organizations, inspired by Bonifacio’s revolutionary legacy of fighting for genuine, systemic change.
As expected, the Philippine government tried to silence, repress, and quell the protests. Malcañang’s last minute decision to stop the Luneta program led by Kilusang Bayan Kontra Korapsyon (KBKK) and the arrests of 3 individuals based on the “anti-balaclava” ban are affront to the basic democratic rights of all people. But this is not surprising in a country that emboldens politicians to systematically steal from its constituents.
The past few months have shown us the destructive and deadly impacts of corruption as Typhoons Uwan and Tino ravaged the country, leaving hundreds dead and thousands more displaced with little trust for the government to actually support. All those who’ve stolen billions under the guise of “flood control projects” have blood on their hands and they must be all held responsible.
We in Malaya Movement USA have been consistent in our position, the one that rang out in our 2022 elections campaign until now: neither Marcos nor Duterte should be in power. Not only are they the children of dictators, their families are the biggest beneficiaries of corruption the country has ever seen. Their political dynasties squeeze every ounce of the people’s resources for their benefit and should have never been allowed into Malacañang in the first place.
This is a pivotal moment in history and one that we must seize. The Filipino people have ousted presidents before, but systemic change is needed to achieve genuine democracy, one that is led by and serves in the interest of the majority.
