Marcos taksil! No UN platform for fascists! No to UN Security Council seat for murderous regime!

Marcos Jr. announced his bid for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council (UNSC) during his speech at United Nations in September 2022 at the 77th UN General Assembly.

Marcos Jr. spent P20 million during his March 2026 visit to the UN to campaign for the seat. The vote will take place in New York on June 3rd.

Let’s answer a few key questions:

  1. What is the UNSC?

  2. Why does Marcos want to join it?

  3. Why do we oppose this?

  4. What can we do about it?

1. What is the UNSC?

The UN Security Council, one of the UN’s six main organs, is tasked:

  • to maintain international peace and security

  • to develop friendly relations among members

  • to cooperate in solving international problems and in promoting respect for human rights

  • and to be a center for harmonizing the actions of nations

Who are the members of the UNSC?

There are five permanent members: China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

There are ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms: Bahrain, Colombia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Denmark, Greece, Latvia, Liberia, Pakistan, Panama, Somalia.

Permanent members get the designation as key countries in the formation of the UN. They have the exclusive right to veto any decisions made even if a majority of the UNSC votes in favor of a resolution.

Recent decisions made by the UNSC

The UNSC votes on matters related to war, human rights, peace and security.

Recently, a resolution regarding the US’ war on Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on Iran was vetoed by Russia and China for pinning the responsibility of the conflict solely on Iran.

The United States has vetoed every resolution calling for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza since October 2023. It also vetoed the State of Palestine’s member application to the UN.

2. Why does Marcos want to join the UNSC?

What he says: "We of the Philippines offer a voice from this region, the voice of developing countries, the voice of climate-vulnerable nations, and the voice of middle-income countries facing competing challenges and priorities."

What it actually means: Given the Philippines', especially under Marcos Jr, historic subservience to U.S. interests, this seat would effectively bolster the U.S. influence in the Security Council. This would come at a time when the U.S. global influence is waning under Trump and the superpower is resorting to all forms of fascist violence to maintain its rule.

3. Why do we oppose the bid?

  1. Marcos' track record of human rights violations and violations of international humanitarian law (IHL) is counter to his assertion that he's bringing peace and stability to the country. His sham counterinsurgency program, the National Action Plan for Unity, Peace, and Development (NAP-UPD) continues to spread violence across the archipelago, essentially enacting de facto martial law in the countryside.

The recent massacre in Toboso, Negros carried out by his fascist military force resulted in 19 deaths, including Filipino American community leaders Lyle Prijolesand Kai Sorem and displaced over 650 people. They deployed indiscriminate firings and strafing, clearly violating IHL.

  2. Marcos has signed off on Trump’s fascist war on migrants that has impacted Filipino migrants in the U.S. Filipinos have been detained and deported by Trump, including hundreds of cruiseship workers.

The Philippine government has provided little to no genuine support for migrants in distress. Requests for Assistance-to-Nationals (ATN) have been denied or minimal, one-time aid is given and promises of legal support are limited to consultations if that.

Babe Romualdez, Marcos’ cousin and Philippine Ambassador said “Our job in the Embassy is to precisely have good relations with the U.S. government.” Meaning, they will not condemn the blatant human rights abuses out of fear of jeopardizing its relationship with the Trump administration.

  3. Marcos has been selling out the Philippines – our people, resources, freedom, and sovereignty – so he can continue to enrich himself and his cronies.

He’s pursued more military and economic deals with foreign countries that ultimately endangers the Philippines and the Filipino people.

Marcos has practically turned the Philippines into one huge U.S. military base by allowing more EDCA bases and other U.S. military facilities to be built in the country.

He’s also facilitated deals that further entrenches the Philippines under foreign economic interests under the guise of development.

4. What can we do about it?

  1. Expose Marcos Jr. as the Philippines’ #1 security threat, human rights violator, traitor, and sell out by conducting widespread education on his track record of abuses and dangerous economic and military deals.

  2. Sign the petition to oppose the UNSC bid and share it to your networks: tinyurl.com/NoMarcosSeat

  3. Create and release various forms of public information materials like statements, videos, flyers, memes and widely propagate it in your communities.

  4. Mobilize to the UN Week of Action April 30 to May 8 where representatives of the PH government will be present under the theme of “Kabuhayan, hindi Bala”, livelihood not bullets.

  5. Plan actions on the Global Day of Mourning on May 5 to call for Justice for the victims of the Toboso massacre.

  6. Mount protest actions on June 3, 2026, the day the UNSC vote is set to take place.

  7. Fight back against fascism and join the movement: malayamovement.com/join
