EDSA @40: TULOY ANG LABAN!
Labanan ang Pasismo! People Power Na! Marcos, Duterte walang pinag-iba! Parehong pasista, kurakot din sila!
This year we celebrate the 40th year anniversary of EDSA People Power, the movement that ousted the Marcos Sr. dictatorship after years of unchecked crimes, human rights violations, and corruption.
Millions came together to demand justice and accountability from his crooked regime and we, as freedom loving Filipinos, must continue this legacy today.
However, that legacy is under threat which is unsurprising since the current president is the son of ousted dictator, Bongbong Marcos Jr. BBM is a fascist no different from his father. In fact, BBM claims that his father brought about prosperity and meaningful change to our country. But both have been at the helm of violence, rampant corruption, and people's suffering.
It is extremely disrespectful that the site of People Power, the EDSA Shrine, was declared a "no rally" zone. The democratic space continues to shrink under BBM's leadership and excuses of the "unconstitutionality" of chants and slogans on placards calling for BBM’s ouster is insulting to the meaning that the Shrine stands for.
What is truly unconstitutional is the government restricting the freedom of expression and censoring protest because they are afraid of the messaging.
BBM has also failed to deliver on his promise of arresting those involved in the flood control corruption, as he has also been implicated in the schemes. When progressive legislators from the Makabayan bloc filed for his impeachment in a sincere attempt to hold him accountable, crony politics came to the fore and his impeachment was junked with no real basis. Now he cannot be impeached for another year while the Supreme Court, clearly in the pocket of the Dutertes, has have declared the 2025 impeachment complaint against Sara unconstitutional.
But the people continue to courageously resist fascist repression and state violence as they did during Marcos Sr.'s tyrannical reign. We can see it in the community of Dupax, Nueva Vizcaya, who stood up against displacement and land-grabbing, resulting in the temporary suspension of Woggle Corporation's permit to plunder. Or the Filipino migrants who have recently been freed from ICE detention and have remained committed to defending all migrants, like Kuya G and Alma Bowman. It's also seen in the millions of people protesting Trump's fascist attacks here in the U.S.
And we will see it as thousands of Filipinos all over the world take to the streets, with or without a permit,on February 25.
